Boards go at the ends where water sits, gates sag because a hinge post has moved rather than because the gate is broken, and palings let go at the rail. Replacing what's failed and re-fixing the rest costs a fraction of a rebuild. If it's past that — and sometimes it is — I'll say so rather than patching something that needs doing properly.
