A TV hung on plasterboard anchors alone will come off the wall eventually, so I find the studs and fix into them — and where the studs don't line up with where you want it, that's a backing board rather than a compromise. Cables go behind the wall or into a conduit, because the tidiest mount in the world looks unfinished with a black cable hanging out of it.
