What I do

Home modifications for ageing in place

Grab rails into studs, threshold ramps, lever handles and better lighting switches — the small changes that keep someone in their own house.

That address doesn't look right — fix it, or leave it blank.

How I approach it

Most of what keeps an older person at home is unglamorous: a grab rail that is actually fixed into a stud rather than into plasterboard, a step at the back door taken out with a threshold ramp, round doorknobs swapped for levers that arthritic hands can work, a handrail on both sides of the stairs instead of one. If an occupational therapist has written a list, I'll work to it — that's the easiest way to get it right, because they've watched the person move through the house and I haven't. Non-slip treatment on wet-area floors and bathroom rails at the height the person actually needs, not the height the box suggests.
