In older homes around here the gaps are predictable: weep holes without screens, a subfloor vent with the mesh rusted out, a lifted roof tile at the valley, a gap under the laundry door wide enough for a mouse, and a possum-sized hole in the eave. I go around and close them properly with mesh and timber rather than expanding foam, which anything with teeth is through in a week. I'm not a licensed pest controller — I don't bait, spray or remove animals, and if something is living in there it has to come out first.
