How I approach it

Weatherboards rot at the ends and the bottom edge, usually where a downpipe splashes or a garden bed has been built up against the wall. Cutting out the bad section, scarfing in a new piece and priming every cut face before it goes on is straightforward, and doing it now saves the frame behind. What matters is fixing what caused it — if the ground level is against the cladding, replacing the board just resets the clock. One caution I'll always raise: cladding on a house from before about 1990 may be fibro rather than timber, and if it is, I stop and it goes to a licensed asbestos removalist. I won't cut, drill or sand it to find out cheaply.
